The Barrel public House in Walkington, was kept by Joseph Holmes b.1834, then by his daughter Ada (b.1877) & her husband Charles Ash, whose daughter Annie married into the Oxtoby Family

The MOULDERS ARMS BEVERLEY

ImageHoratio Thomas HOLMES(1862,son of Joseph) was landlord of the Moulders at the end of the 19th Century.
(1893 Beverley trade directory & 1901 census)












The DOG & DUCK Ladygate, BEVERLEY

ImageHoratio Thomas HOLMES(1862) moved from the Moulders to this fine establishment in early 20th century (certainly there in 1914)
The name " Dog and Duck" derives from the Old Yorkshire sport in which a duck's wings were tied, before being thrown in the nearest pond or stream, at which points dogs were then set upon it







The Brewer's Arms

1861 The landlord was a Mr.John Dunkin (Coop
er & Victualler) whose wife was the Aunt of John Sutton PROCTOR husband of Eleanor HOLMES. John Sutton Proctor and his father were both Coopers in HULL and lived at the Pub. William HOLMES(1816) , father of Horatio(1842), grandfather of Eleanor (1867) was also a cooper in HULL



ChurchStreet, Sutton The Ship, 44-46 Good traditional looking village local. Built as a house c.1804 on land owned by the Chamberlain Trust. In use as a public house by 1815. In 1953 The Chamberlain Trust sold the pub with its adjacent two almshouses (built c.1804). Shortly afterwards the pub was extended to incorporate the former almshouses and renamed The Ship. Almshouse plaque still survives above a blocked doorway, although it is now painted over and partially obscured by an inn sign.

This pub was Kept by HENRY HOLMES(1818), not a member of our HOLMES Family. He was the Grand Father of Arthur Pullinger who married ELIZA HOLMES(1880)


The GORDON ARMS Portswood Southampton

kept by FANNY HARDING grandmother of ELIZA MARTIN wife of ALFRED HOLMES (1900)
