THOMAS HORATIO HOLMES ( 1909-1988)
Tom Holmes was born on the 26th January 1909 at13 Onslow Road( now Swift Rd formerly New Rd)in Woolston , Hants. The only child of Edmund Holmes & Maggie BELLEW.
Tommy
was brought up very closely with his cousin Brian Cocks who lived at
No.9 Onslow Road (now swift Road). Tom's grandfather Horatio
lived at No.5.Tom was educated at St.Patrick's School , Woolston. At
age 14 he entered into his indentured apprenticeship with
J.I.Thorneycroft as a Brass Moulder. He was offered a chance to turn
professional at Billiards; However his father Ned wisely told him thet
he should finish his apprenticeship. He remained a top amateur player
in Southampton & Hampshire for most of his life. he played in the
legendary Woolston Social Club side which beat all-comers, along side
the likes of Sam O'Dell ( I had a photo of that famous team..which I
lent to the club...and much to my chagrin has not been returned). On
taking up the game of snooker he quickly became Hampshire Champion,
winning the George Lester Trophy at his first attempt. Tom played for
the Southampton Town Billiards side frequently from the 1920's to the
early 1980's, picking up many trophies & medals at both club &
representative level.

Tom won the 1953 Southampton Coronation Cup at Sailing. (14ft centreboard dinghies)
i He loved to smoke a pipe or cigar and
have a pint 
Tom enjoyed gardening for relaxation

Tom joined Pirelli General in 1933. He Managed the Pirelli Foundry at Eastleigh until his retirement in 1974
