EDMUND HOLMES
Edmund HOLMES was born in Woolston in 1881. The first HOLMES to be born in Hampshire, he was a pattern maker. On the
1st of December 1907 he wed Maggie Bellew, in the Weslyan chapel in
ObeliskRd Woolston. Ned was a keen cricketer and won many medals for
his fine under-arm bowling. I had a picture of him with the Sholing
Cricket side, but unfortunately i lent it to the local paper(So'ton
Echo) and they lost it! Jonny baines reckoned that he bowled out WG
Grace, but frankly I doubt it, although it is conceivable that he
played with CB Fry. I have a gold medal dated 1900, inscribed PTCCC presented to E.HOLMES by CB YOUNG. Ned
liked nothing more than a pint in the Grove or The Ship and a game of
Bezique. He always had a bottle of Navy Rum on the table, and smoked at
least 3 packets of Capstan full strength every day.He died in 1964 aged
83.
I shall be posting more photos of Ned when I get them from my sister Anne
